The scientific foundation behind OCO™ optomyography — high-frequency non-contact facial bio-signal measurement, biomechanical muscle activation mapping, and predictive affective analytics for global research and enterprise integration.

Foundational Innovation

The Engineering Thinking Behind Our Sensing Platform

Since 2015, Emteq Labs has pioneered head-worn biosensing technologies that bridge laboratory precision and real-world usability. Our non-contact optical sensing infrastructure captures multi-modal physiological data — including facial muscle displacement, 9-axis movement, and cardiovascular indicators — at sampling speeds up to 6,000 times per second.

Multi-Modal Bio-Signal Capture Infrastructure

Traditional facial affect monitoring relies heavily on optical cameras or surface electromyography (sEMG). Camera systems degrade under dynamic lighting, movement, and pose shifts while creating data privacy friction. Surface EMG requires physical skin contact, conductive gels, and skilled positioning, causing drift and skin fatigue over extended sessions.

Emteq Labs’ patented Optomyography (OMG) technology measures minute micro-contractions of facial muscles completely contact-free. Integrated into lightweight wearable frames, OMG delivers ultra-low-noise signals across diverse environmental conditions without compromising participant comfort or data integrity.

Physiological Mechanics

Quantifying Positivity, Negativity, and Behavioural State

Human affect operates as an dynamic adaptive mechanism. By isolating primary facial muscle group dynamics, our analytical models track emotional valence and arousal continuously.

Zygomaticus Major Activation (Positivity)

The zygomaticus major muscle draws the angle of the mouth superiorly and laterally during smiling. Our sensors track both macro-expressions and sub-conscious micro-contractions, serving as an objective index for positive valence and engagement.

Valence Metric Positive Affect (+1.0 Scale)

Corrugator Supercilii Activation (Negativity)

The corrugator supercilii muscle pulls the eyebrow medially and inferiorly, producing brow furrowing. Precise displacement measurement provides continuous detection of stress, cognitive effort, and negative emotional valence.

Valence Metric Negative Affect (-1.0 Scale)

The Dimensional Model & Evaluative Space

Rather than relying solely on discrete emotion categories (happy, sad, angry), Emteq Labs implements continuous interpretive frameworks: the Dimensional Model (mapping Valence and Arousal) and Evaluative Space Models.

By pairing facial muscle displacement with real-time inertial movement, head posture, and outward scene contextual markers, our machine learning models translate raw physiological vectors into actionable behavioral insights for digital health, human factors, and extended reality (XR) studies.
