Understanding the paradigm shift from invasive skin-contact electromyography and computer vision limits to optical, contact-free micro-movement tracking.
The Mechanics of Non-Contact Optomyography (OMG)
For decades, researchers studying facial expressions relied on two core modalities: surface Electromyography (sEMG) and RGB Camera-based Facial Action Coding Systems (FACS). Both possess inherent flaws. sEMG requires conductive gels, skin preparation, and physical electrodes that restrict natural movement and suffer from signal drift due to sweat. Camera tracking, conversely, degrades under ambient sunlight, fails during head rotation, and raises severe GDPR compliance concerns when raw video streams of human faces are processed or stored.
Our patented OCO™ Optomyography technology bypasses these barriers entirely. Embedded within light-reflecting spectacle frames, miniaturized infrared micro-reflectometers emit non-visible light pulses onto the facial skin surface. By measuring microscopic variations in reflected light intensity caused by cutaneous vector shifts, OCO™ captures three-dimensional facial muscle activation—specifically targeting the Zygomaticus major (smiling), Corrugator supercilii (frowning), Orbicularis oculi (squinting), and Frontalis (surprise)—completely contact-free, without touching the skin or recording facial video.
Sensor Fusion & 9-Axis Kinematic Synchronization
Real-world emotion sensing cannot occur in a vacuum. A micro-movement of the facial skin could signify genuine emotional valence or simply be an artifact of walking, chewing, or head nodding. To resolve this, our smart sensing eyewear integrates a high-precision 9-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)—combining a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, and 3-axis magnetometer—alongside a barometric altimeter.
By running an on-chip Kalman filtering algorithm, our sensor fusion engine isolates locomotion and posture vectors from facial muscle contraction signals. This allows real-time segmentation of eating behaviors, mastication count, speech patterns, continuous valence/arousal state mapping, and cognitive fatigue indices even while subjects walk through real-world environments.

Empowering Greece’s Academic, Healthcare, & Industrial Ecosystems
Exploring how non-contact facial expression sensors drive innovation across Hellenic research hubs, island tele-rehabilitation networks, and Mediterranean maritime operations.
Academic Neuro-Research & EU Horizon Grants
Greece has emerged as a key European hub for neuroscience, human-computer interaction (HCI), and affective computing research. Leading research centers such as the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), and the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) in Crete are actively securing Horizon Europe funding.
Our non-contact facial sensing eyewear provides Greek researchers with a turnkey, high-yield data acquisition tool. Native compatibility with Lab Streaming Layer (LSL), Python, MATLAB, and ROS2 enables seamless synchronization with EEG caps and eye-tracking setups in behavioral psychology labs.
Remote Neuromuscular Tele-Rehabilitation
The geographical distribution of the Greek archipelago presents unique healthcare delivery challenges across the Aegean and Ionian islands. Remote clinical assessment of neurological conditions—such as stroke rehabilitation, Bell's palsy recovery, and Parkinson's facial mask monitoring—requires quantitative biosensors.
By deploying OCOsense™ smart glasses through Greece's expanding e-Health initiatives, clinicians in Athens hospitals can remotely track micro-muscular facial asymmetry and rehabilitation exercise compliance of patients living in remote island regions in real time.
Maritime Logistics & Port Operator Safety
As home to the Port of Piraeus—one of Mediterranean Europe’s largest shipping and logistics hubs—Greece demands strict occupational safety standards. Crane operators, vessel captains, and long-haul logistics drivers operating under intense shifts face severe micro-sleep and cognitive burnout risks.
Our non-contact sensing frames continuously monitor micro-expression indicators of drowsiness, blinks, and facial tension drop-offs. Integrated with haptic or audio feedback, the system issues immediate fatigue alerts without intruding on operator comfort or requiring static cabin cameras.
Why Leading Global & Greek Organizations Partner with Us
Extensive intellectual property, clinical compliance, and proven institutional validation back every sensor exported to the Hellenic market.
Strict Regulatory & GDPR Adherence
Navigating the European Union’s stringent Medical Device Regulation (EU MDR 2017/745) and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) requires absolute sensor architecture integrity. All hardware exported to Greek research labs and clinical sites carries full CE Marking, RoHS compliance, and WEEE certification.
- On-Device Edge Computing: Facial activation signals are processed locally on the embedded ARM Cortex processor, outputting numerical valence/muscle vectors rather than storing facial image data.
- Patented IP Portfolio: Protected by international patent families including GB2561537, GB2604076, US11,003,899, and US11,538,279.
- Biocompatible Frame Ergonomics: Lightweight, hypoallergenic materials designed for extended continuous wear during 8-hour clinical trials.
Global Institutional Validation
Our non-contact optomyography sensors are not theoretical concepts; they are validated in peer-reviewed scientific studies and deployed across prestigious academic and clinical institutions globally, including:
Frequently Asked Questions for Greek Buyers & Researchers
Key answers regarding hardware customization, shipping logistics to Greece, SDK integration, and clinical data governance.
QHow does Optomyography (OMG) differ from camera-based facial expression coding in clinical settings?
Unlike camera-based systems (such as FACS video algorithms), OCO™ optomyography measures skin displacement directly via discrete optical sensors built into the frame bridge and lower rim. This eliminates common camera limitations: it works in pitch darkness, under bright Mediterranean sunlight, during fast head movements, and when the user's face turns away from a central camera. Crucially, because no facial video feed is recorded, it complies automatically with strict EU GDPR patient privacy standards in Greek medical trials.
QWhat is the typical shipping lead time and customs process for orders delivered to Greece?
We maintain dedicated export pipelines for European Union member states. Standard hardware shipments to Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, and Heraklion are dispatched via express courier (DHL Express / FedEx Priority) with full CE compliance documentation included. Transit times typically range between 3 to 5 business days from order confirmation, with zero intra-EU tariff friction for academic and commercial institutions holding valid EU VAT registrations.
QCan Greek university researchers integrate raw sensor output with third-party software like MATLAB or Unity?
Yes. We provide an open, cross-platform Software Development Kit (SDK) supporting Python, C++, ROS2, Unity, and Unreal Engine. The platform natively supports Lab Streaming Layer (LSL), allowing Greek research teams to synchronize time-stamped optomyographic muscle activation signals with third-party EEG, ECG, eye-tracking, and VR headsets in real time.
QHow does the device perform eating behavior monitoring and chewing detection?
By combining optical sensors aligned with the temporalis and masseter muscle regions with the 9-axis IMU, our proprietary machine-learning models isolate jaw movement frequencies characteristic of mastication. The system accurately distinguishes between chewing events, swallows, speech, and random facial fidgeting, offering clinical-grade digital biomarkers for metabolic health, nutrition studies, and eating disorder therapy.
QWhat technical support and localized training services are available for Greek enterprises?
Every enterprise hardware deployment includes direct access to our senior biomedical application engineers. We offer remote onboarding workshops, custom SDK calibration consulting, and tailored algorithm training to assist Greek academic laboratories and industrial clients in seamlessly launching their research protocols.
